Kiosk browser for Android

One tablet, one job – and nothing else.

heusoft Kiosk locks Android devices to your application: no other apps, no system settings, no leaving the page. Once set up, the device keeps running unattended – even after a power cut.

  • Licence valid for life
  • Device replaceable
  • GDPR compliant

Built for devices nobody is watching

Information terminal in the lobby, display on the shop floor, ordering point in the store: wherever a tablet stands in public, it should do exactly that – and nothing else.

Locked

Home button, overview and other apps are blocked

Self-reliant

Starts on its own after a reboot or power cut

Clean

Wipes the previous user's traces after every session

One-off

Licence per device, no term and no follow-up costs

Features

What heusoft Kiosk brings

Over 200 settings, all set to a safe default out of the box. You switch on what you need.

Locked-down device

Status bar, navigation bar and home button are locked, notifications stay hidden. In full kiosk mode the device also cannot be reset or started in safe mode, and the app cannot be removed.

A browser that follows your rules

You decide which addresses are allowed, what appears when something goes wrong and whether camera, location, file upload and zoom may be used. Your own scripts can be added to any page.

Screensaver & power

Playlist of pages, images and videos when idle, schedules for switching the display on and off, dimming and a warning at low battery.

Motion detection

The device wakes when somebody steps in front of it – via proximity sensor, accelerometer, microphone or front camera. Off by default.

Remote control on your network

From your network you control the device through a web interface in the browser – or automatically through interfaces. Encrypted and password protected.

Home screen & content

Tiles for pages, apps and files instead of a single start page, plus PDF viewing, video and audio playback and content stored on the device – for operation entirely without internet.

Management

Every device in one window

From the second device onwards, walking around gets tedious. With online management you see every kiosk in the portal and control it from there – wherever it stands.

  • State of every device: online, battery, kiosk mode, current page
  • Commands to one device or to a whole group
  • Maintain and distribute settings profiles centrally
  • Device groups by location or purpose
  • History per device, deleted after set periods
  • Monthly availability and usage report as a PDF – for displays with proof of which content was shown

No changes to your firewall

The devices contact the portal themselves and collect their tasks. Nothing has to be opened in your firewall, and devices on mobile networks can be reached too.

Commands still arrive quickly: in practice only a few seconds pass between the click in the portal and execution on the tablet.

  • Remote commands, single device or group
  • Distribute settings profiles centrally

  • Without a subscription the app keeps running unchanged
  1. All licences of a type that you already hold count towards the price tier. For online management, the tier is set anew with every invoice.
  2. All prices are net prices plus the VAT applicable in the buyer's country.

Activation

Ready in a few minutes

No licence key, no typing. The device connects to your customer account, where you assign a licence to it with one click – or have that done automatically if you wish.

  1. Install the app

Install the app on the Android device. It runs straight away, at first with a watermark.

  2. Buy licences

Create a customer account and buy as many licences in the shop as you run devices.

  3. Connect the device

Create a QR code in your customer account and scan it while setting up the tablet – or enter the code in the app. Then assign a free licence to the device in your customer account. If you agreed to automatic assignment when buying, the device takes it on its own.

  4. Swap the device if needed

If a tablet breaks, release its licence in your customer account and assign it to the replacement. There is no need to buy a new one.

Security

Public use calls for data economy

A kiosk is used by many people one after another. The next one should find no traces of the previous.

  • After two minutes without a touch, the device deletes cookies, history and form entries
  • Camera, microphone, location and statistics are off by default
  • Devices are recognised by a random ID, not by hardware identifiers
  • The log only records the website visited, not the full address
  • Encrypted transmission, operated on servers in Germany
  • Remote screenshots only while nobody is using the device – input fields blanked out, every capture logged

What a profile may not do

Online management lets you distribute settings centrally. Some settings are deliberately excluded: kiosk mode, kiosk PIN and the remote control password.

This is checked in two places – when saving in the portal and again on the device. A tampered profile can therefore neither lock a tablet out nor take over its remote control.

Compliance

Accessible and documented – not just locked down

Since 28 June 2025 self-service terminals in Germany fall under the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG), and every public kiosk processes personal data. heusoft Kiosk brings both along instead of leaving them to you.

Accessibility for self-service terminals

An accessibility bar with large buttons sits below the content – on every page, whatever the web application offers.

  • Larger text and a high-contrast rendering at one tap
  • Read aloud: the page is spoken by the device
  • Lower view moves the content within reach of wheelchair users and children
  • Warning before the session ends with the option to continue – as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) require

GDPR records from the actual settings

The portal knows which functions are switched on – camera, microphone, statistics, clean-up after every session – and turns that into the paperwork you would otherwise write by hand.

  • Records of processing activities under Art. 30 GDPR as a PDF, per device, group or entire fleet
  • Technical and organisational measures (Art. 32) with the number of devices they apply to
  • Privacy check in the device list: a camera without a notice or a session that never ends gets flagged
  • Kept up to date automatically – the document always matches the actual settings

The records are a working basis, not legal advice: legal bases and the embedded web application remain your responsibility.

For developers

Open to your integration

Your web app controls the device through a JavaScript bridge, scripts use the local REST interface, and state and events flow to your own broker via MQTT. The developer documentation describes every interface with examples.

Frequent questions

What people ask first

Is the licence really one-off?

Yes. One licence covers one device and does not expire. There is no renewal and no follow-up cost – updates to the app are included.

What if a tablet breaks?

The licence stays yours. Release it in your customer account or remove the broken device, then assign the licence to the replacement as soon as it is connected. No need to buy a new one.

Do I need online management?

No. Without a subscription the app runs in full and you set up each device on site. The subscription pays off as soon as you want to update several devices remotely or keep an eye on their state.

Can I subscribe per device?

Yes. Billing is per device and month, invoiced once a year. You can therefore keep some of your devices in management and run the rest without a subscription.

Why does the tablet have to be set up from scratch?

Only if the app is registered as the device administrator during setup (Android calls this “device owner”) can it reliably lock the home button, the overview and other apps – anything less can be worked around. This is only possible on a new or reset tablet: you scan a QR code from your customer account during setup, and the app does the rest.

What does the tablet need as a minimum?

Android 10 or newer with an up-to-date “Android System WebView”, and internet over Wi-Fi or cable. For full kiosk mode the tablet must be factory-fresh or reset to factory settings. Camera, NFC and Bluetooth are only needed for presence detection and scanning – everything else runs without them. For continuous operation we recommend a permanently connected power supply.

Will the devices get through our firewall?

Yes. The devices contact the portal themselves and collect their tasks. Nothing has to be opened in the firewall, and nobody accesses the device directly from outside.

Does the app make our kiosk BFSG-compliant?

It covers the part that lies in the kiosk software: large controls, text size, contrast, read aloud, reachable content and a warning before the session ends. Whether the terminal as a whole is compliant also depends on your web application and the physical setup – the app cannot fix a form without labels.

Where does the GDPR record get its data from?

From the devices themselves. With every contact a device reports its privacy-relevant settings to the portal. The record lists only the processing activities that are actually switched on, names the data categories and deletion periods, and marks what you still need to add – such as the legal basis or your data protection officer.

Are there volume discounts?

Yes. Both the device licence and online management have four price tiers: from 10, 50 and 200 devices the price per device drops. Licences you already hold count towards new orders; licences already purchased do not become cheaper retroactively. For online management the tier is set anew with every invoice – based on how many licences are booked at the start of the billing period.
